You might think you’re not creative because you can’t draw / paint / dance to save your life. You’ve got this image in your mind that people who do it well, do it a certain way and you because you don’t match up to that your interpretation is invalid.

I’m here to tell you… that’s FALSEHOOD.

Thing is, you’re more creative than you think. Can you recall a time you had to make a meal without following a recipe? How about refereeing tantrums between toddlers? Or what about doing something to cheer someone up? Ever taken a photo of something you liked?

Yup, you’re creative in so many ways EVERY DAY. You just thought that it’s called being normal.

It’s actually no different to how you could also become creative in an artistic sense whether your choice includes words, photography, painting, drawing and an infinite number of other things not even considered artistic.

We’re complex and emotionally evolving creatures that thrive off exploring throughout our lives. Each time you play you awaken more to the wonder that you are and of the world around you.

Imagine your journal to be a portal where you can access this bountiful delight, let me show you with these next steps.

STEP 1 – GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF NOW

Our creativity THRIVES in the now. Carry your journal with you at all times (don’t get clever, you can leave it out of the bathroom) and a few supplies that you’re curious about or enjoy the use of. Having them close to hand makes any moment a good time to pull them out and record an observation that moved you. Such a seemingly small and insignificant thing but its power lies in the humbling effect of being present and allowing our senses to observe without resistance.

STEP 2 – MAKE A HAPPY MESS

There is no right or wrong way to play with different mediums, there is YOUR way. Trying new things can seem daunting but that’s because it’s not familiar. The more you play the more familiar this becomes and then the fear no longer has a hold on you. Messes are meant to be made. They’re essential to the process of creating from an authentic place.

STEP 3 – MAKE IT UP AS YOU GO ALONG

We all love a great quote, a scene from a movie, or that AHA moment where something lit up our imagination. How would you like to record that moment in your journal? Some people call it commonplacing, others enjoy creating spreads of collections. You can categorise in sections of your journal and add entries when the fancy takes you.

STEP 4 – BE READY TO RECEIVE MORE

Playfulness begets so much more than you bargained for. This is because there really isn’t any limit to what you can creatively do! There is only the moment and how you wish to let it happen and witness it with a grateful heart. Hold space to observe this dance with creativity, you’ll be amazed with what happens.

STEP 5 – DO IT DAILY

Truth is, you’re never going to regret doing something that brings you joy. The laundry will still be there; the work never ends; and yet a moment to play in a meaningful way for you can be just the ticket needed during the challenges we face everyday.

Think of it this way, does it really need to get desperately bad before you do something good for yourself? Or can you add a little dose of happiness into the mix every day?

Remember: You are a WONDER who deserves to be honoured and celebrated.
