Hey Friend,
Yesterday we talked about how to purge unwanted thoughts and feelings that you’ve been holding on to for so long. This is a necessary step to create more space for what you do want to shine through.
If you’re new here, click to read the post before continuing.
Think about this for a minute:
You’re about to embark on a road trip of a lifetime. You’ve been looking forward to this for so long and you’re super excited that the day has finally come to get on the road.
You’ve been packing up the car all morning and suddenly realise everything that you’ve packed so far will be useless for the trip and as you look deeper it gets worse. You’ve packed stuff you don’t want with you but you just can’t seem to go anywhere without this junk.
Here’s the thing, if you don’t unpack your car that’s full of junk then you can’t make space for the stuff you do need to take with you. Stuff that will come in handy for this trip, that using these items will save you time and hassle when you’ll need it and enrich your experiences.
So here’s what I wanna ask you, dear friend: why do you tolerate this when it comes to your life but wouldn’t if you were going on a trip?
We all hoard stuff inside ourselves for some reason. We’re full to the brim with stuff we don’t realise that we have no need for anymore but have no clue how to let it go. It can seem scary trying to imagine living another way when you’re so used to this for so long.
My friend, this is why PART 1 in getting more of what you want is crucial. If you haven’t already done it, do it before you continue reading this. Now is the right time. It’s all you have. It won’t take long and I promise, if you’re scared or worried that it’s gonna be too tough to face, I’ll be here. Reach out in the comments and I’ll get right back to you. You can do this!
Okay, moving on. So if you cleared the junk out and you’re still reeling from that don’t worry. It’s ok to feel emotionally disorientated. Confused, even. It won’t last.
Today we’re going to focus on a really important aspect to planning with purpose: how our mind works.
Below is a video of a brief talk given by Dr Bruce Lipton
In it he explains the purpose and functions of our minds. For years people thought that the conscious and subconscious are the unity of a single mind. So if the conscious mind became of something then the subconscious mind should follow along with it as well because they’re both together.
Here’s the thing, they’re two separate minds and they both learn in different ways. If we can understand this, we can essentially reprogram them for not only what we want to get out of life but it then becomes the meaningful change we seek.

THE CONSCIOUS MIND
- It’s very creative
- You can read a self-help book or anything for that matter and feel educated
- This is where you ‘understand’
- It’s where your sense of self is

THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND
- It’s a habit mind
- Created from the third trimester of your mother’s pregnancy until around 7 years old
- It’s basically a machine filled with programs that run your life
Reading a self help book once is not a habit. Sure, you picked up information that enhanced your conscious awareness yet it didn’t touch any of your subconscious programs. You have the same behaviour you had before you read the book.
The conscious mind learns from reading the book, the subconscious mind learns from habit.
We talk to ourselves, a lot. When you’re talking to yourself and telling yourself what to do or not to do, you’re doing that consciously. But in your subconscious mind, there’s nobody there to hear your story. It’s a machine where programs are downloaded and run.
Most of these programmes are negative. Accumulated over time from family and prominent figures in your life. And sometimes, not the best examples in our lives.
Your first 7 years of life is a ‘hypnotic phase’ – everything is switched on and recording. It’s also where imagination and reality is mixed. You’re not conscious yet of yourself and therefore cannot differentiate between what is and isn’t useful for you to believe and know.
Your entire life is run from this blueprint. So when you’re in your conscious mind and you’re trying to coach yourself to becoming a better you, living your best life and all that jazz; if your programs don’t match up to that you basically end up sabotaging yourself over and over again.
The good news is that our minds are stronger than we think and is open to change but first we need to understand how to train it so we can reprogram it to work in our favour.
One of the ways you can start is by listening to a recording of the change you seek. Marisa Peer explains in her book ‘I Am Enough’ that there isn’t a voice that is more important to us than our own. Hearing yourself say the things you yearn to hear from others is far better and life changing than anyone else’s could ever be.
1. WRITE A LETTER TO YOURSELF
If you could talk to yourself in a loving and respectful way, what would you say? Acknowledging ourselves from a place of respect and kindness is powerful.
In this letter acknowledge where she is at in her life. What does she need from you? How do you wanna show up for her? How can you reassure her of your presence and commitment to helping her overcome her troubles?
Take your time here and really feel into this and be as specific as possible. This will help to see the things that matter most to you.
2. WRITE YOUR SCRIPT
Now that you’ve given yourself a voice of acknowledgement from a place of love, kindness, and respect, turn to a fresh page and write a personal statement.
Use affirmations that do not evoke a negative response, e.g., I am enough, I am loving and caring, I can face challenges with strength and ease. Don’t worry about whether you believe it or not, right now. Mute your inner meanie for this part.
Keep going until you have something that when you read it back to yourself you feel your entire being saying YES.
3. RECORD YOURSELF SPEAKING YOUR SCRIPT
Make it Oscar worthy!
This is where your phone will come in handy. Find the voice note recorder on your phone and in a quiet moment of your day with your script in hand start recording yourself reading it.
Once you get to the end of the script, keep reading it over and over again until you have about 20mins of this recording.
4. LISTEN TO YOUR RECORDING WHEN YOU GO TO BED AT NIGHT
Or when you’re going to take a nap.
This is a crucial part to reaching your subconscious mind directly.
As you slip into the theta frequency phase, aka ‘hypnotic phase’, before you fall asleep your subconscious is wide open to reach.
5. REPEAT YOUR STATEMENT TO YOURSELF THROUGHOUT THE DAY
You can also listen to your recording whilst you’re doing other things, but the key here is that you bring the presence of mind and emotions to what you’re saying.
Let out a resounding YES after each affirmation. Visualise yourself in that state and feel, hear, see, what that is.
Dance it out, even. Movement, emotions, and visualisations all help to anchor our meaningful changes.
WHY WANTING ISN’T ENOUGH
When we say things like “I want to lose weight so I can be healthy” it’s an incomplete statement for the change you seek. Wanting is redundant. It’s a desire and you can’t reach your meaningful change through desires alone.
What it is good for though is identifying the change you seek. So when you hear yourself saying I want this or that, create a statement that represents the desired outcome.
- I love and trust my body to be healthy
- My health strengthens every moment I live, breathe, hear, see, and feel
- I give myself healthy choices that strengthen my body to work at its best
- I am grateful for the abilities of my healthy body
“The function of the mind it to create coherence between your programs and your reality.” – Dr Bruce Lipton
MATCH THE RIGHT STATEMENT WITH THE RIGHT ACTION
This is the most important and best part to create meaningful and lasting change in your life.
Now that you know that habits can reprogram your subconscious mind to work in your favour, you must decide on the actions that you are willing to do every day to form the structure of your habits.
Tomorrow we’ll delve into how to choose the actions that will help you to commit to forming your new habits. Stay tuned!
Be awesome,
